Keeping your home as secure as possible from potential burglary may save your possessions and have the added advantage of reducing the risk of a claim being made against your Georgia home insurance policy. Here are some tips on keeping your home burglar free.

  • 1. Try to never leave your home in a state that suggests it is unoccupied. When leaving your home for a vacation, either set an automatic timer to switch your lights on and off or ask a friend to spend some time in your home.

  • 2. Don’t place expensive items close to a window, especially a window that may be seen from the street.

  • 3. After unpacking electronic equipment such as computers and flat screen televisions, don’t leave the packaging outside for days waiting for the garbage collection.

  • 4. A highly visible dummy alarm system may be a powerful deterrent to potential burglars – a real one, of course, may be even better.

  • 5. Keep the trees and shrubs at the front of your home trimmed and thinned so intruders can be more easily detected.

  • 6. After gardening lock all your equipment away, especially ladders or other tools that could be used to gain entry.

  • 7. Don’t leave expensive outdoor equipment such as snow blowers or lawn mowers in view even when they’re locked away. Cover them with drop cloths where possible.

While nobody ever expects their home to be burglarized, it does happen and the consequences may be devastating. Try to implement these simple security precautions to help reduce the likelihood of a burglary related claim against your Georgia home insurance.
