Your 18th birthday was just yesterday. You already got your first tattoo, bought your first lottery ticket, and drove around town between 12am and 6am because your license says you can.

Life seems great right?

Yes, the life of an 18-year-old is fun and exciting, but let’s be honest, adulting is hard.134

Coming from someone who is about to turn 19, I’ve picked up a few lessons in the past 10 months.

  1. College- Going off to college (or staying home) is an exciting new chapter for you, but a new chapter also means new responsibilities. For example, getting yourself to class. The not-so-great thing about college is that the temptation to stay in bed all day is increased by a bazillion percent. Do yourself a favor and make it easier on you Circadian Rhythm (thank you Biology). Unless you’re like me and would rather be finished sooner than later, schedule classes no earlier than 10am.
  2. Money- I have come to develop a love-hate relationship with this term. I love to spend money but the earning part… Don’t you wish there was a job that paid you to do nothing? Once you become an ‘adult’, where you get your money shifts from those two people who you love so dearly to…you. Learn some practical ways to set aside some money every paycheck and don’t buy on impulse because it turns out that you don’t actually need that neck massager from BrookStone (no you don’t).
  3. Socializing- Although it’s nice to stay home and chill after a long day of class/work, make some time to get out and meet people. They say the friends you make in college are the friends you’ll have for life, and I could not agree more. The plus here is that you aren’t as limited to where you can go. So if you feel like going to six flags with your bestie, go! If you want to head into the city with your #squad T-Swift style, do it!

You will never be 18 again so make this year count.
